Govt Medical College Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram Conducts First Robotic Joint Surgeries

Although the hospital does not currently own robotic surgery equipment, the recent procedures mark a major step towards adopting advanced surgical technologies in the government sector.
In a significant milestone for public healthcare in Kerala, the Orthopaedics Department at the Government Medical College Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram, has successfully performed robotic-assisted surgeries on 10 patients.
Although the hospital does not currently own robotic surgery equipment, the recent procedures mark a major step towards adopting advanced surgical technologies in the government sector.
The procedures were conducted using equipment temporarily brought in for student training purposes. The patients underwent knee and hip replacement surgeries. According to doctors, this is the first time in the state that such procedures have been performed using robotic surgery in a government hospital.
The surgeries were led by Dr. Manoj Kumar, Head of the Orthopaedics Department.The team also included Dr. Shobha (Head of the Anaesthesia Department), Dr. Dhanya, Dr. Radhika, and Dr. Jayasree (Head of the Radiology Department), along with Sooraj and surgical team members Dr. Vinesh Senan, Dr. Ashok, Dr. Shibu, and Dr. Devasuman. Nurses Ramya and Sreeja, along with other supporting staff, played a key role in the operations.
Conducted with the prior approval of higher authorities, including the hospital superintendent, the surgeries resulted in successful recovery for all ten patients.
Doctors said the outcomes demonstrate that highly precise treatment can be delivered to more patients once permanent robotic surgery equipment is installed at the hospital.
