Gleneagles Hospital Unveils Advanced Asthma Care Center in Chennai

The new clinic adopts a multidisciplinary approach to asthma management involving pulmonologists, allergists, and respiratory therapists.

Gleneagles Hospital, Chennai, has recently inaugurated the Advanced Center for Asthma Care aiming to address the pressing healthcare needs of patients with severe asthma.

The center was officially opened by Dr J Radhakrishnan, IAS., Additional Chief Secretary to the Government of Tamil Nadu, in the presence of Dr Nageshwar Rao, CEO of Gleneagles Hospital Chennai, and Dr Suresh Sagadevan, Clinical Lead Consultant & Interventional Pulmonologist.

Equipped with advanced diagnostic tools, the center focuses on accurately classifying asthma severity. This enables the creation of personalized treatment plans incorporating medication, biologics, lifestyle changes, and patient education.

Dr Suresh Sagadevan emphasized the local challenges posed by Chennai’s environment, said, “In Chennai, the challenges of severe asthma are exacerbated by high pollution levels, humidity, and other environmental factors, making effective management more critical than ever. The Advanced Center for Asthma Clinic at Gleneagles Hospital Chennai is a much-needed step forward in addressing this challenge, offering hope and better outcomes to patients who struggle with this condition every day.”

Addressing a Growing Public Health Concern

Highlighting the broader impact of asthma in India, Dr Apar Jindal, Head of Pulmonology at Gleneagles Hospital Chennai, shared, “Asthma affects millions of people worldwide, with nearly 3–4% of Indian adults and 10–15% of Indian children experiencing this condition. Among these, 5–10% of cases are classified as severe asthma, characterized by frequent attacks, persistent symptoms, and a significant impact on daily life.”

The clinic is designed to cater to this population with severe asthma, which often requires specialized care. The center aims to improve quality of life and reduce life-threatening complications through comprehensive assessments and evidence-based interventions.
