GEM Hospital Introduces AI Cancer Chatbot Dr. GEM in Coimbatore

GEM Hospital in Coimbatore has launched Dr. GEM, an AI-powered cancer chatbot marking a step forward in digital oncology on the occasion of World Cancer Day.
The 24/7 AI cancer care assistant is designed to provide accurate information, symptom guidance, screening awareness, and post-treatment support through a conversational interface.
A demonstration video showed how users can access the chatbot via WhatsApp by scanning a QR code, enabling interaction without fear or hesitation.
Addressing the gathering, A. Sivathanu Pillai, former Chief Controller (R&D), Defence Research and Development Organisation, said cancer is increasingly linked to lifestyle changes and emphasised that early detection can significantly improve survival rates. He noted that nearly 20 million people worldwide are affected by cancer and highlighted the role artificial intelligence can play in transforming healthcare delivery.
C. Palani Velu, Chairman of the GEM Hospital Group, said the initiative reflects the hospital’s commitment to combining technology with compassionate cancer care. Praveen Raj, CEO of GEM Cancer Centre, said the hospital was among the first in the country to introduce an AI assistant dedicated exclusively to oncology.
The launch event was attended by A. Sivathanu Pillai, former Chief Controller (R&D), Defence Research and Development Organisation, and A. Saravana Sundar, Inspector General of Police, West Zone, Coimbatore.
