Hospitals have been asked to sign the necessary agreements to allow the scheme's rollout, which is set to begin in November 2025.
The Delhi government has issued a directive to 110 hospitals across the national capital, mandating the implementation of the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY) scheme.
The move aims to ensure that healthcare services under the scheme are available to beneficiaries at the earliest. Hospitals have been asked to sign the necessary agreements to allow the scheme's rollout, which is set to begin in November 2025.
The state health ministry, led by the Department of Health & Family Welfare, emphasized that the scheme is intended to provide health benefits to millions of Delhi residents. The recent announcement follows the distribution of Ayushman Bharat Yojana cards, which started on April 10, 2025, after Delhi signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Health Authority (NHA) of the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
In a related development, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta also introduced an additional INR 5 lakh top-up, which will be provided over and above the INR 5 lakh cover already available under the central government's scheme. This increases the total healthcare coverage for beneficiaries to INR 10 lakh. According to Gupta, “Around 6.54 lakh families in Delhi will benefit under the scheme, and with the additional INR 5 lakh top-up, this is expected to improve healthcare accessibility for our residents.”
Speaking at the signing event, Union Health Minister JP Nadda added, “Around three million people, comprising more than 650,000 families and an estimated 600,000 senior citizens, will benefit from the Ayushman Bharat PMJAY scheme.” This extensive reach aims to provide affordable healthcare to a large segment of the population in Delhi.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta further highlighted the government's efforts to ensure all eligible residents receive their Ayushman Bharat health cards. She directed local MLAs to assist their constituencies, particularly focusing on senior citizens over the age of 70.
Additionally, Delhi plans to set up 'Arogya Mandirs'—health centers across the city, aiming to establish 1,139 locations to enhance healthcare access.
