CommonSpirit Health & ESO Launch EMS-Hospital Data Exchange in Utah

The collaboration, effective from July 1, 2025, covers Salt Lake, Davis, and Utah counties, connecting five CommonSpirit hospitals with regional EMS and fire agencies.

CommonSpirit Health has partnered with ESO, a data services and software provider for EMS, fire departments, hospitals, and government agencies, to launch an EMS-hospital data exchange across Utah.

The collaboration, effective from July 1, 2025, covers Salt Lake, Davis, and Utah counties, connecting five CommonSpirit hospitals with regional EMS and fire agencies.

At the center of the partnership is the ESO Health Data Exchange (HDE), an interoperability platform that delivers electronic patient care records (ePCR) directly to hospitals’ electronic health record (EHR) systems while allowing EMS teams to access clinical outcome data in real time.

Real-Time Data Access for Improved Patient Care

The HDE platform provides EMS crews with timely insight into patient diagnoses and treatments, reducing feedback time from weeks or months to mere hours. This access enables first responders to understand patient outcomes more comprehensively, allowing for more informed clinical decisions in the field.

“Information is invaluable in medical care, and the more we can share between the field and the hospital, the better care we can provide,” said Dr. Tim Bode, Chief Medical Officer for CommonSpirit Health’s Mountain Region. “This partnership benefits patients, EMS crews, and our hospital providers alike. We needed to make this tool available to all agencies that bring patients to our facilities, regardless of their existing technology partnerships, because we understand how vital this data sharing is for improving patient outcomes.”

EMS Training and Continuous Learning Enhanced

Access to hospital outcome data also strengthens medical knowledge and training programs for EMS teams. Viewing complete patient histories, including lab results, imaging, and procedure notes, equips crews to manage similar cases more effectively in the future. ESO HDE integrates seamlessly with all major hospital EHR systems, securely delivering discrete clinical information to EMS teams.

The collaboration emphasizes timely, secure, and comprehensive data sharing between hospitals and first responders, aiming to improve patient outcomes and enhance field-level medical expertise across Utah.
