CM Siddaramaiah Inaugurates a 450-bed Multi-speciality Hospital at KRIMS; Assures Another for Karwar

A cancer unit has also been proposed for Karwar, and emphasized that the government has set a target of establishing superspecialty hospitals for the poor in every district.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has assured that a superspecialty hospital will be sanctioned for Karwar in the upcoming State Budget, with construction scheduled to begin in the next financial year.

The assurance was made while inaugurating a newly constructed 450-bed multi-speciality hospital building at the Karwar Institute of Medical Sciences (KRIMS), a project aimed at expanding access to advanced treatment in the Uttara Kannada district.

Karwar, the administrative headquarters of Uttara Kannada, has long relied on referral centres in cities such as Udupi, Mangaluru and Hubballi for complex medical care. The new 450-bed facility at KRIMS, built at an estimated cost of INR 200 Cr, is expected to reduce patient migration for secondary-level services.

Addressing the gathering, Siddaramaiah said, “The people from this region have been asking for a superspecialty hospital. We will definitely sanction it in the next budget,” he said, adding, “And when it is ready, I will come and inaugurate it.”

He further stated that the government has set a target of establishing superspecialty hospitals for the poor in every district.

Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar emphasised the state’s investment in public health infrastructure. He also encouraged industrial investment in the coastal belt to create local employment opportunities.

Medical Education Minister Sharanprakash R Patil stated that INR 2 Cr has been spent on equipping the new multi-speciality hospital with essential facilities. He reiterated the broader policy objective of ensuring that every district in Karnataka has both a government medical college and a multi-speciality hospital.

Siddaramaiah added that Karnataka currently has 22 government medical colleges, with new institutions planned in Kolar, Puttur and Bijapur. A cancer unit has also been proposed for Karwar.
