CK Birla Hospitals–CMRI Kolkata Opens Eastern India’s First Private Bone Bank

The center is designed to support trauma, oncology, spine, and reconstructive surgeries with a reliable supply of processed grafts that meet national and international standards.

CK Birla Hospitals–CMRI Kolkata has inaugurated a dedicated Bone Bank, becoming the first private hospital in Eastern India to establish an operational facility for regulated bone allografts.

The center is designed to support trauma, oncology, spine, and reconstructive surgeries with a reliable supply of processed grafts that meet national and international standards.

The new Bone Bank ensures access to safe, pre-screened grafts through stringent donor evaluation, microbiological testing, validated sterilisation processes, and end-to-end traceability. The availability of ready-to-use allografts is expected to reduce dependence on autograft harvesting, which often increases operative time, causes donor-site pain, and limits graft volume.

By offering structural grafts, corticocancellous blocks, morselised grafts, and cancellous chips, the facility enables surgeons to select grafts based on specific clinical requirements. These options expand reconstructive possibilities for patients undergoing tumour resections, complex fractures, nonunion repairs, spinal fusions, or deformity corrections.

Highlighting its clinical relevance, Dr. Rakesh Rajput, HOD & Director, Orthopaedics, CK Birla Hospitals–CMRI, said that dedicated bone banks play a key role in advanced orthopaedic reconstruction. He noted that allografts help restore structural stability without subjecting patients to the trauma of graft harvesting and emphasised the importance of screened, standardised, and documented grafts for high-precision procedures.

Commenting on the launch, Sombrata Roy, Unit Head, CK Birla Hospitals–CMRI, stated that the facility strengthens the hospital’s clinical infrastructure by ensuring dependable access to regulated grafts. According to him, such availability supports complex surgeries and reduces patient waiting periods across the region.

The launch event was attended by senior health officials from West Bengal, including Shri N. S. Nigam, Principal Secretary, Health & Family Welfare Department; Dr. Swapan Saren, Director of Health Services; and Prof. (Dr.) Indrajit Saha, Director of Medical Education. Their participation highlighted the state’s broader push to strengthen ethical and standardised tissue banking systems.

The hospital acknowledged the guidance of Prof. (Dr.) Ajoy S. M from Ramaiah Medical College & Hospitals, whose expertise contributed to developing CMRI’s quality protocols and operational framework.

Beyond clinical use, the Bone Bank will support research, surgical training, graft performance studies, and simulation-based learning. With validated protocols and cold-chain systems, the facility is expected to function as a regional resource for safe bone procurement, processing, and distribution.
