CHS to Sell Three Pennsylvania Hospitals to Tenor Health Foundation

The planned transfer includes the Regional Hospital of Scranton, Moses Taylor Hospital, Wilkes-Barre General Hospital, and affiliated care sites.

Community Health Systems (CHS) has signed a letter of intent to sell three Pennsylvania hospitals under Commonwealth Health to nonprofit Tenor Health Foundation, company officials confirmed.

The planned transfer includes the Regional Hospital of Scranton, Moses Taylor Hospital, Wilkes-Barre General Hospital, and affiliated care sites.

The agreement, reported by local media including the Scranton Times-Tribune, marks the latest step in efforts to secure the future of the Scranton-area health system after a prior sale attempt failed.

First Step Toward Transfer

Tomi Galin, executive vice president of corporate communications and marketing at CHS, said in an email: “This is the first step in a process that we all hope will result in a completed transaction and preserve the healthcare services provided by Commonwealth Health. As the process moves forward, we'll share any future major updates.”

Tenor Health Foundation CEO Radha Savitala confirmed the development, saying, “We look forward to working with the communities served by these facilities.”

Previous Deal Collapse and Interim Support

CHS had previously reached a $120 million asset purchase agreement with nonprofit WoodBridge Healthcare in July 2024. However, the deal was terminated in November due to WoodBridge’s “inability to satisfy the funding requirements.”

Following the collapse, concerns grew over the potential closure of Regional Hospital and Moses Taylor Hospital. Local foundations and nonprofits invested millions of dollars in temporary funding to sustain operations. Local government leaders and the supporting organizations have expressed optimism about the new agreement.

Tenor Health Foundation, formed by former Prime Healthcare executives, focuses on managing and improving operations at financially challenged small and medium-sized hospitals. Earlier this year, Tenor took over Sharon Regional Medical Center, restoring core services in March and reopening fully by May.
