Athena Behavioral Health has launched Northeast India’s largest integrated private psychiatric hospital in Guwahati, expanding its network to five facilities as demand for mental health and addiction treatment rises across the region.

The new facility will provide integrated treatment for psychiatric illnesses and substance use disorders, including psychiatric consultations, psychotherapy, detoxification support, rehabilitation services, and long-term recovery planning.

According to the National Mental Health Survey, nearly 8% of Assam’s population experiences mental health morbidity, while regional studies have reported increasing cases of depression, anxiety, substance use disorders, and suicide-related distress.

Founded in 2021 with its first center in Gurgaon, Athena Behavioral Health has expanded into a multi-city behavioral healthcare network focused on evidence-based psychiatric and addiction treatment.

The Guwahati hospital has been designed to address conditions such as depression, anxiety, trauma, alcohol dependence, substance addiction, and co-occurring psychiatric disorders through multidisciplinary treatment protocols and round-the-clock clinical supervision.

The company is also extending its women-only psychiatric care model to the Guwahati center to address gender-specific clinical and safety requirements in mental healthcare settings.

Dr. Shradha Malik, founder and CEO of Athena Behavioral Health, said the expansion is aimed at decentralizing access to structured psychiatric care in underserved regions.

The hospital will also focus on integrated addiction treatment, an area of growing concern in Northeast India where experts have highlighted rising alcohol and substance use disorders alongside shortages of certified de-addiction centers and trained addiction psychiatrists.

According to the organization, the facility combines mental health and addiction services through integrated care pathways, evidence-based recovery models, structured therapy programs, and family engagement frameworks.

Dr. Nimesh G. Desai, director of clinical governance at Athena Behavioral Health and former director of the Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences, said expanding structured psychiatric services into underserved regions remains important for reducing India’s mental healthcare treatment gap.

Athena also plans to conduct regional outreach and awareness initiatives focused on reducing stigma and encouraging early intervention for mental health and addiction-related conditions.
