Apollo Proton Cancer Centre Launches Integrated Advanced Liver Cancers Clinic in Chennai
The clinic has been set up to address critical gaps in liver cancer care by offering a multidisciplinary, evidence-based approach.
Apollo Proton Cancer Centre (APCC), Chennai, launched India’s first integrated Advanced Liver Cancers Clinic, exclusively focused on treating primary liver cancers and metastases.
The facility was inaugurated by Radhakrishnan Thiagarajan, IPS (ADGP - Retd.).
The clinic has been set up to address critical gaps in liver cancer care by offering a multidisciplinary, evidence-based approach.
India accounts for around 6 percent of global liver cancer cases, and Tamil Nadu has witnessed a steady rise in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and liver metastases.
This increase is attributed to factors such as hepatitis, alcohol-related liver disease, obesity, and late-stage detection.
Until now, the absence of integrated programs led to delays in diagnosis and treatment, often resulting in less effective outcomes. The new clinic aims to change that by combining expertise from medical oncology, surgical gastroenterology, hepatobiliary surgery, radiation oncology, interventional radiology, genetics, pathology, anesthesia, pain, and palliative care.
“With the launch of Apollo’s Advanced Liver Cancers Clinic, we are redefining liver cancer care in India,” said Mr. Karan Puri, CEO, ACC & APCC. “This clinic symbolizes hope, innovation, and compassionate care for patients and families.”
Dr. Sujith Kumar Mullapally, Consultant – Medical Oncology, highlighted the clinic’s contribution to treatment development and clinical research. “The clinic will help develop standardized treatment pathways, advance research, and explore emerging therapies, all while prioritising patient-centred care,” he said.
As part of the launch, Thiagarajan’s memoir, A Victory Over the Insidious Killer, was released. The event also included expert discussions on TARE (Transarterial Radioembolisation), surgical advances, precision diagnostics, and the scope of proton therapy in liver cancer.
