This move comes over a year after the retail giant acquired One Medical for $3.9 billion, aiming to enhance its healthcare offerings.

Amazon has merged its Amazon Clinic telehealth service with its One Medical primary care platform. This move comes over a year after the retail giant acquired One Medical for $3.9 billion, aiming to enhance its healthcare offerings.

Amazon Clinic, launched in November 2022, provides virtual care for common health concerns and expanded nationwide last August. It offers telehealth services through the Amazon website and mobile app, including video visits. The service operated under Amazon Health, alongside One Medical and Amazon Pharmacy.

With the integration, Amazon Clinic is rebranded as Amazon One Medical Pay-per-visit telehealth. This service addresses over 30 common conditions, such as pink eye, flu, and sinus infections. Consumers can opt for messaging visits at $29 or video visits at $49.

The integration aims to simplify the patient experience by offering more care options and reducing the steps needed to access care.

"It’s simply too hard to get the medical care you need when you need it, and affordably—long waits, high costs, and impersonal care make it unnecessarily difficult for many patients today. We’re focused on improving the occasional and ongoing medical care experience,” stated Neil Lindsay, senior VP, Amazon Health Services.

The Amazon One Medical membership, available for a monthly or annual fee, includes on-demand virtual care and the ability to book same and next-day appointments at One Medical offices.

Furthermore, the membership costs $199 annually, with a discounted rate for Prime members at $99 per year or $9 monthly. Membership benefits include annual in-person “well visits,” preventive screenings, and services for managing chronic conditions including asthma, diabetes, and high blood pressure.

Partnerships & Expansion

Amazon One Medical has more than 150 primary care clinics across the US and partnerships with third-party telehealth providers including SteadyMD and Wheel.

The service also collaborates with health systems and employers. It has partnered with Health Transformation Alliance to expand access to its primary care services to 67 employers and nearly five million employees.

Additionally, One Medical works with over 8,500 companies to offer its services as an employee health benefit.

Additionally, one medical company is collaborating with CommonSpirit Health's Virginia Mason Franciscan Health to provide specialty care access and has expanded its primary care model to New Jersey in partnership with Hackensack Meridian Health.

Amazon's Healthcare Strategy

Amazon's healthcare strategy focuses on connecting patients with the necessary products, services, and professionals.

"In healthcare, we think of our mission as exactly that: It's to connect the dots between the humans, the customers, the patients, and the products, services, and professionals they need to get and stay healthy," Lindsay said at the HLTH 2023 conference.

Despite previous setbacks, such as the closure of the Haven joint venture with J P Morgan Chase and Berkshire Hathaway, Amazon continues to invest in telehealth services.

In May, Walmart shut down its health centers and virtual care services, while UnitedHealth’s Optum ended its virtual care service. Amazon remains committed to improving accessibility and affordability in healthcare.

In February, Amazon laid off a few hundred roles across One Medical and Amazon Pharmacy.

Lindsay reassured employees then, stating, "We will continue hiring providers and investing in teams and technology that will help us provide high-quality and accessible care to more people."
