AI Could Bridge India’s Healthcare Workforce Deficit, Says Preetha Reddy
Apollo Hospitals has developed the Clinicians Intelligence Engine, a technology-driven decision-support platform designed to assist doctors and medical staff in making faster, more informed decisions.
India’s healthcare sector, despite rapid progress and a vast consumer base, continues to face an acute shortage of trained professionals. Apollo Hospitals’ Vice Chairperson Preetha Reddy believes that technology, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), holds the key to closing this gap and transforming healthcare delivery.
“The problem in India is that we don't have enough trained manpower. We've got a large consumer base, but not enough people to service that. So the obvious answer is to be able to use AI or technology to help us navigate a lot of work where we need human skill to do,” Reddy said in a recent event.
She emphasized that the imbalance between available manpower and patient demand creates operational challenges, especially in high-pressure environments such as emergency care.
To help address this, Apollo Hospitals has developed the Clinicians Intelligence Engine, a technology-driven decision-support platform designed to assist doctors and medical staff in making faster, more informed decisions.
The system has already built around 260 clinical pathways to help medical professionals determine the right course of action in real-time emergency and clinical situations.
Reddy explained that the tool supports clinicians by improving accuracy and efficiency in patient care. Through AI integration, institutions like Apollo aim to reduce dependence on manual processes, allowing medical practitioners to focus on complex, high-value tasks.
She also noted that such innovations could have a far-reaching impact beyond the private sector. Once fully integrated, AI-based systems could help standardize and improve care in public hospitals, extending access and consistency across India’s healthcare landscape.
