UToledo Health Deploys Ambient AI with Epic to Enhance Clinical Documentation

By integrating AI directly into Epic, the solution enables clinicians to generate structured clinical notes natively within their existing EHR workflow, supporting more efficient documentation primary care and surgical specialities.

University of Toledo Health in Ohio has announced plans to deploy Nabala’s Ambient AI-powered clinical documentation solution integrated with Epic, aimed at improving documentation workflows, accuracy, and operational efficiency across its network.

The deployment follows an initial pilot phase in which the AI tool was tested across multiple specialties.

During the 8-week trial, the health system reported measurable improvements, including 29% reduced time required for closure of the chart.

Further, the AI tool also demonstrated a decline in documentation backlogs in several departments from more than 400 open charts to fewer than 30, which is expected to reduce pending records and administrative workloads.

The AI system is intended to capture clinician-patient conversations in real time and convert them into structured clinical notes within the electronic health record.

The solution is designed to reduce the need for manual data entry and allow clinicians to focus more on patient care.

In addition, the AI-enabled documentation also supports documentation completeness and coding specificity in clinical notes.

This approach is expected to ensure accurate capture of higher-acuity visits and strengthen overall revenue cycle performance.

Following this pilot outcome, UToledo Health has expanded the use of the ambient AI solution across a broader group of clinicians. The ongoing initiative aligns with UToledo Health's vision to deploy next-generation clinical innovation by integrating AI into clinical workflows while improving physician experience and patient care.
