Telangana Proposes AI-Driven Cancer Screening to Enhance Early Detection

Pending the outcome of the pilot, the government intends to introduce the AI-based screening system in all state-run medical colleges.

In a progressive step toward modernising public healthcare, the Telangana Health Department has announced plans to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into cancer screening services, TOI reported.

The initiative aims to enhance early detection using high-resolution imaging and precision diagnostics, enabling the identification of abnormalities with a level of accuracy previously unattainable through conventional methods.

According to officials, once the AI system detects irregularities, the results will be instantly referred to oncologists or specialist doctors for further evaluation.

The state will initiate the project through a pilot programme in three districts, which will serve as a foundation for broader implementation across Telangana.

Expansion Plans & AI Training for Healthcare Staff

Pending the outcome of the pilot, the government intends to introduce the AI-based screening system in all state-run medical colleges. Software development for the initiative is already in progress at the MNJ Cancer Institute.

The government is also considering the establishment of dedicated day care centres in each district for cancer screening.

The project will focus on screening for oral, breast, and cervical cancers—conditions that represent a significant share of India’s overall cancer burden.

To support the effective rollout of the programme, healthcare personnel will undergo specialised training in AI-based diagnostics and workflows.

Improving Accessibility & Reducing Diagnosis Delays

Patients with abnormal screening results will be referred to MNJ Cancer Hospital and Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) for advanced testing and treatment.

Additionally, chemotherapy services will be decentralised and made available in Siddipet, Sircilla, and Adilabad, helping to bring treatment closer to rural populations.

Given the current shortage of radiologists in Telangana, officials believe that AI-enabled diagnostic tools will significantly reduce delays, improve accuracy, and address disparities in cancer care.

The project is expected to receive dedicated funding support from the Central Government.
