The construction of a new multi-speciality hospital within the Thoothukudi Government Medical College and Hospital (TKGMCH) premises is nearing completion, marking a significant step forward for healthcare infrastructure in the region.

The hospital, which was developed at a cost of INR 136 Cr, is in the final stages of infrastructure work.

Spread over 4.1 acres, the upcoming seven-storey facility will house 650 beds. Of the total project cost, INR 118.35 Cr has been allocated for civil and electrical works, INR 16 Cr for medical equipment, and INR 2 Cr for furniture.

The facility will host a wide array of departments across its floors. The ground floor will include the radiodiagnosis unit, radiation oncology, central lab, central sterile supply department, and pharmacy.

The first floor will accommodate cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery with a dedicated cath ICU. The second floor will feature neurology and neurosurgery units, followed by nephrology and urology on the third floor.

The fourth floor will be home to medical and surgical gastroenterology, while the fifth floor will focus on medical and surgical oncology. The sixth floor is designated for plastic surgery and burn care, and the seventh floor will comprise operation theatres and post-operative wards.

To ensure the hospital's efficient functioning, the administration has proposed staffing that includes 52 doctors, 150 nurses, 36 ministerial staff, 110 paramedical professionals, and 70 sanitary workers.

Once civil works are completed, advanced medical equipment installation will commence upon receiving necessary approvals from government authorities.

Commenting on the development, Silas Jeyamani, Resident Medical Officer of TKGMCH, said the new facility would significantly improve the operational efficiency of several departments that currently operate within space constraints.

“Departments such as medical oncology, surgical oncology, and nephrology have so far been functioning as a single-man department, and the new facility will allow for the appointment of additional doctors in every department,” he added.
