The tumor, measuring 18.2 x 13.5 cm, is reported to be the largest adrenal tumor ever removed robotically in a minimally invasive procedure.

Safdarjung Hospital has achieved a significant milestone in its robotic surgery program with the successful removal of a giant adrenal tumor from a 36-year-old woman.

The tumor, measuring 18.2 x 13.5 cm, is reported to be the largest adrenal tumor ever removed robotically in a minimally invasive procedure.

Medical Superintendent Dr Sandeep Bansal confirmed the landmark achievement, praising the hospital's commitment to providing cutting-edge healthcare services.

Professor and Head of the Department of Urology and Renal Transplant, Dr Pawan Vasudeva, performed the complex surgery, assisted by Dr Niraj Kumar and Dr Avishek Mandal. The anesthesia team included Dr. Sushil, Dr. Bhavya, and Dr. Megha.

Navigating Complex Challenges During Surgery

The procedure was especially challenging as the tumor had dangerously adhered to three vital structures: the Inferior Vena Cava, the liver, and the right kidney.

Dr. Vasudeva emphasized that precision is critical in such cases. He explained that the Da Vinci robotic system's 3D vision and highly dexterous robotic arms allowed for meticulous dissection, significantly enhancing surgical accuracy compared to conventional laparoscopy.

The surgery lasted over three hours and was completed successfully without any complications. The patient had an uneventful recovery post-operatively and was discharged within three days.

Robotic Surgery Ensures Faster Recovery & Minimal Scarring

Dr Vasudeva highlighted the advantages of robotic surgery, noting that it involves small keyhole incisions, leading to reduced postoperative pain, quicker recovery, and faster return to daily activities.

Had the surgery been performed through the open route, it would have required a large incision of more than 20 cm, with a recovery period stretching over several weeks.

Dr Bansal said that this milestone underscores Safdarjung Hospital's growing expertise in robotic surgery and its dedication to delivering state-of-the-art medical care free of cost to patients.
