Through IoT integration, caregivers and healthcare professionals can monitor medication adherence in real time, enhancing patient safety and improving treatment outcomes.
MIT World Peace University (MIT-WPU), Pune, has developed a modular Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled tablet and capsule dispenser to streamline medication management.
This advanced device is designed to assist patients with complex dosing schedules by ensuring accurate and timely dispensing of medication while enabling real-time remote monitoring.
Traditional medication dispensers often require manual intervention and lack remote monitoring features, making them less effective for patients with complex medical regimens.
MIT-WPU’s new solution addresses these limitations with a modular design integrated with IoT connectivity, allowing automated and precise medication dispensing.
The device features an equilateral-shaped container, a motor-driven dispensing system, and a controller unit that allows user-defined dispensing schedules.
Dr Amol Tagalpallewar, Professor at the School of Pharmacy, MIT-WPU, said, “Maintaining consistent medication adherence is a major challenge, especially for patients with complex regimens. This IoT-enabled dispenser automates the process and provides remote monitoring capabilities, empowering patients and caregivers with better control and peace of mind,” he said.
Dr C H Patil, an Associate Professor at the School of Computer Science and Engineering, emphasized the broader impact of the device.
“This development marks a step towards a future where technology and human-centered design converge to create more accessible and effective healthcare solutions,” he noted.
The dispenser operates using a system of dispensing units connected with sprockets and powered by a motor. The controller unit sends signals at pre-set times, automating the dispensing process.
Through IoT integration, caregivers and healthcare professionals can monitor medication adherence in real-time, enhancing patient safety and improving treatment outcomes.
MIT-WPU’s smart dispenser is expected to improve medication management in-home care, assisted living, and hospital settings, offering a reliable solution for better patient care and medication adherence.
