India Inaugurates First Public-Funded Bio-Foundry to Boost Biotech Innovation

The state-of-the-art facility is designed to accelerate bio-based innovations by enabling collaborations between startups and researchers.

Union Minister of State for Science & Technology Dr. Jitendra Singh inaugurated India’s first publicly funded bio-foundry under the DST-ICGEB initiative during the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) Board of Governors Meeting in New Delhi.

The state-of-the-art facility is designed to accelerate bio-based innovations by enabling collaborations between startups and researchers.

ICGEB, which comprises 69 member countries, plays a critical role in advancing global sustainable development through biotechnology research, training, and technology transfer.

India Positions Itself as a Global Biotech Leader

Describing India as an emerging global biotechnology hub, Dr. Singh underscored the significance of the new facility in supporting global scientific collaboration.

He highlighted key innovations backed by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) and its arm BIRAC, including India’s first indigenously developed antibiotic, Nafithromycin, for monotherapy in bacterial pneumonia, as well as diagnostic kits for Dengue and HIV.

Dr. Rajesh Gokhale, Secretary of DBT, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing India’s expanding leadership in biomedical and bio-industrial innovation.

He pointed to recent initiatives that are shaping the sector's future and strengthening India’s position in the global biotech landscape.
