Delhi Cabinet Approves 250-Bed Trauma Block at GTB Hospital

The project will be developed within the existing hospital campus under Phase-IV of the Centre’s Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY), with costs shared by the Central and Delhi governments. 

The Delhi Cabinet has approved a ₹244.87 crore project to construct a 250-bed super-specialty-cum-trauma block at Guru Teg Bahadur (GTB) Hospital in Dilshad Garden, East Delhi, to expand emergency and critical care capacity amid high patient occupancy. The project will be developed within the existing hospital campus under Phase-IV of the Centre’s Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY), with costs shared by the Central and Delhi governments. 

The proposed seven-storey facility will cover approximately 22,550 square meters and comprise a basement, ground floor and six upper floors. According to officials, it will include 250 beds, 72 ICU beds, 48 specialist outpatient department (OPD) rooms and nine operation theatres.

The bed capacity will include 20 emergency beds, five Burns ICU beds, 70 ICU beds, four isolation beds, 22 pre- and post-surgery beds, 102 general ward beds and 25 private rooms. The basement will house a blood bank and laboratory. 

The ground floor will accommodate a 24-hour emergency department along with CT scan, MRI and X-ray facilities. The fourth and fifth floors will contain 175 general and private ward beds, while the sixth floor will include administrative offices, classrooms and a laboratory for training doctors.

Specialty services planned for the facility include neurology, orthopedics, dermatology and dental care. Officials said 77 beds will be designated for critical care.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said GTB Hospital is the only major government hospital in East Delhi and has been operating with a heavy patient load, with nearly all beds occupied. She said the additional facility is intended to strengthen trauma services for accident victims and patients requiring critical emergency care. 

A joint committee comprising senior officials from the Central and Delhi governments will monitor the project and review construction progress every three months. The new hospital block is targeted for completion by 2028.
