Fiji Upgrades Public Hospital X-Ray Services with AI-Enabled Digital Systems

The Ministry said the new systems are integrated with AI software that supports doctors by identifying potential abnormalities, helping deliver faster and more accurate diagnoses for patients.

Fiji’s public health system has moved into the digital age with a major upgrade of X-ray services, as public hospitals begin replacing outdated analogue machines with modern digital systems equipped with artificial intelligence.

The Ministry of Health said old X-ray equipment, some of which had been in use for more than 15 years, is being phased out and replaced with new digital units. The shift eliminates the need for manual film processing and improves both the speed and quality of diagnostic services across the country.

According to the Ministry, a total of 18 new floor- and ceiling-mounted digital X-ray machines have been rolled out nationwide. The equipment has been supplied by a leading Chinese manufacturer through a locally awarded public tender.

The Ministry said the new systems are integrated with AI software that supports doctors by identifying potential abnormalities, helping deliver faster and more accurate diagnoses for patients.

Installations have already been completed at CWM Hospital in Suva, as well as facilities in Nausori and Taveuni. The remaining units are being deployed to major divisional and subdivisional hospitals, along with selected rural health facilities, to ensure equitable access to improved diagnostic services.

The Ministry said the upgrade is expected to reduce waiting times, enhance image clarity and strengthen patient care across Fiji’s public health network.
