Budgam to Get Major Health Infra Lift as J&K Clears Hospital, CCU Plan
The 100-bed CCU will enhance Budgam’s emergency response capacity by enabling critical patients to be treated locally, reducing the need for transfers to tertiary hospitals in Srinagar.
The Jammu & Kashmir administration has approved plans to establish a 125-bed district hospital and a 100-bed Critical Care Unit (CCU) in Budgam, reflecting a continued drive to strengthen secondary and emergency healthcare services in the region.
The decision follows detailed administrative approvals and land allocations aimed at expanding access to quality healthcare infrastructure for the district’s residents.
The proposed hospital will be located in the Reshipora area of Budgam, on land approved for transfer by the Administrative Council (AC) under the chairmanship of Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, officials said.
The construction is expected to address long-standing healthcare gaps and improve patient access to critical and routine medical services without requiring long travels to distant tertiary centres.
Rajeev Rai Bhatnagar, Advisor to the Lieutenant Governor, emphasized the significance of the new facility in meeting local healthcare needs. “This project will bring much-needed medical services closer to the people of Budgam and will help improve overall healthcare delivery in this region,” he said.
The approval also saw participation from Dr. Arun Kumar Mehta, Chief Secretary, J&K, and Dr. Mandeep Kumar Bhandari, Principal Secretary to the Lieutenant Governor, reflecting strong administrative support.
The CCU’s establishment alongside the district hospital is aimed at bolstering the district’s emergency response capabilities, enabling the treatment of critically ill patients locally rather than depending solely on higher-tier facilities in Srinagar.
Administrators indicated that the project is part of a broader healthcare development strategy across Jammu & Kashmir, targeting improved infrastructure in underserved areas.
The expansion is also expected to create local employment opportunities for medical and allied health professionals, further strengthening Budgam’s healthcare ecosystem.
