Aster CMI Hospital Launches PEARL Pediatric Liver ICU for Critical Care in Children

Aster CMI Hospital in Bengaluru has launched PEARL (Pediatric Emergency and Advanced Response for Liver Care), a specialized Pediatric Liver Intensive Care Unit (ICU) aimed at managing severe and life-threatening liver conditions in children.

The unit was inaugurated by M Maheshwar Rao (IAS), Chief Commissioner of the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA), in the presence of senior hospital leadership and clinical experts.

PEARL is designed to address pediatric liver emergencies that often escalate rapidly into complications such as brain swelling, infections, organ failure, and metabolic imbalances. The ICU focuses on providing coordinated, specialist-led care with an emphasis on early intervention and continuous monitoring.

The unit is equipped with advanced monitoring systems and supported by a multidisciplinary team that includes pediatric hepatologists, liver transplant surgeons, intensivists, anesthetists, infectious disease specialists, and specially trained liver ICU nurses. This integrated setup is aimed at enabling precision-based treatment during critical conditions.

According to Prof. (Dr) N. Karthik Nagesh, Program Director – Pediatric Centres of Excellence, early targeted interventions play a key role in improving outcomes in pediatric liver emergencies.

He noted that the unit allows continuous liver-focused critical care tailored specifically for children, which may reduce the need for liver transplantation in some cases.

Dr Prashanth N, CEO of Aster Hospitals, Karnataka, stated that PEARL strengthens the hospital’s ability to deliver structured and timely pediatric critical care through a dedicated liver ICU model.

The ICU is structured to ensure that monitoring, medication, and treatment protocols are aligned specifically with pediatric liver conditions, aiming to improve recovery outcomes through early detection and intervention. The unit also incorporates family-centered care, including communication support and guidance during critical treatment phases.
