Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has recently met the Union Health and Family Welfare Minister JP Nadda in New Delhi to discuss the state’s roadmap to becoming a medical tourism hub.

The meeting focused on strengthening Assam’s healthcare infrastructure and aligning state initiatives with central government support.

CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, who has been actively working to expand healthcare capacity in Assam, sought guidance from JP Nadda on policy frameworks and strategic interventions required to position the state as a preferred destination for medical tourism.

During the meeting, both leaders discussed the need to upgrade hospital infrastructure, enhance access to advanced medical technologies, and improve the overall quality of healthcare services.

The focus was on both public and private sector participation to build a robust healthcare ecosystem capable of attracting patients from across India and neighboring countries.

Further, the Assam CM also met Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan to discuss the state’s development trajectory, with a focus on healthcare expansion and economic growth.

“Look forward to his continued guidance in our journey of a Viksit Assam,” Sarma added.

A key aspect of the discussion was leveraging Assam’s geographical advantage in the Northeast. The state is strategically positioned to serve not only the northeastern region but also patients from nearby international borders, making it a potential gateway for cross-border medical tourism.

The initiative is part of Assam’s broader vision to transform its healthcare sector through increased investment in medical colleges, super-specialty hospitals, and diagnostic facilities. The state government aims to create a system that is both accessible and globally competitive.

Medical tourism in India has seen significant growth due to affordable treatment costs and the availability of skilled medical professionals. By entering this space, Assam aims to boost economic growth, generate employment, and enhance healthcare delivery for its residents.
