Amazon One Medical Partners with Cleveland Clinic for Ohio Launch

One Medical, which Amazon acquired in 2023 for $3.9 billion, offers same-day and next-day in-person primary care appointments and 24/7 virtual care to patients who pay a monthly or yearly subscription fee.

Cleveland Clinic and Amazon One Medical plan to open their first joint primary care location in late October, a health system spokesperson told Becker’s.

The academic health system and Amazon’s hybrid primary care chain partnered in October 2024 to bring One Medical to the Cleveland market.

According to the spokesperson, the first location will be in a retail plaza in Avon, Ohio, a Cleveland suburb.

One Medical, which Amazon acquired in 2023 for $3.9 billion, offers same-day and next-day in-person primary care appointments and 24/7 virtual care to patients who pay a monthly or yearly subscription fee.

The company collaborates with health systems in its roughly 20 markets. In northeast Ohio, One Medical will own and operate the offices and employ the staff but share revenue with Cleveland Clinic, which contributes startup costs to launching the practice and sits on a joint operating council with One Medical.

“Something that really resonated with us with One Medical was the fact that they closely partner with a health system in every market they join,” James Gutierrez, MD, chief of the Cleveland Clinic Primary Care Institute, told Becker’s in 2024.

“They don’t place themselves to come in and compete with other players in the market. They look for opportunities to align and complement them, really to the benefit of the community.”

“We also saw it as an opportunity to learn,” he added.

“They do some very exciting things with their digital front end, and we saw it as an opportunity to learn more and see more about how patients engage with their technology and how that can facilitate connection with primary care.”
