Adani Group to Set Up 2,000-Bed Hospital as West Bengal Expands Healthcare Infrastructure

The project is expected to expand access to tertiary care services in Eastern India while strengthening the state's healthcare infrastructure.

The West Bengal government has announced a series of initiatives to strengthen healthcare infrastructure across the state, including a partnership with the Adani Group.

The announcement was made during a programme at the state secretariat, Nabanna.

Speaking at a programme at the state secretariat, Nabanna, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari stated the West Bengal government has signed an agreement with the Adani Group for a 2,000-bed hospital in NewTown.

The land has been allotted for the project and will include 1,000 beds reserved free of cost for economically weaker patients.

Meanwhile, the remaining 1,000 beds will operate commercially to support advanced medical technologies and specialized tertiary care.

The latest announcement follows an earlier proposal by the Adani Group to invest at least INR 2,500 crore in developing a health city in New Town's Action Area II in West Bengal.

The proposed facility would be the group's third healthcare project in India, following initiatives in Mumbai and Ahmedabad.

This public-private synergy aims to bridge crucial gaps between patient volume and available clinical beds.

In addition, the modern hospital will feature diagnostic tools, advanced operation theaters, and specialized subspeciality departments.

Additionally, this establishment will generate substantial employment opportunities for doctors, nursing personnel, and allied health staff.

By integrating affordable and free care for vulnerable populations with commercial services, the project seeks to ensure financial sustainability alongside social equity.

Further, officials stated the project is expected to expand access to tertiary care services in Eastern India while strengthening the state's healthcare infrastructure.

They added that the public-private partnership is intended to combine private sector investment with provisions for affordable care.

The hospital is among a series of healthcare projects announced by the state government covering both public and private sectors.

Furthermore, medical education remains a key focus of the ongoing state healthcare upgrade strategy.

As part of the initiative, the state government has also announced plans to establish four new medical colleges in Kalimpong, Alipurduar, Paschim Bardhaman and Dakshin Dinajpur, aimed at expanding medical education capacity and improving access to healthcare training in underserved regions.

These institutions directly fulfill long-standing demands for localized medical teaching facilities in underserved regions, the officials said.

Alongside this, CM Adhikari also said another AIIMS has been proposed for North Bengal.
