Tamil Nadu Accelerates ABHA Rollout as 2.54 Cr Residents Join the State's Digital Health Network

Tamil Nadu has stepped up the implementation of the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM), with more than 2.54 crore residents now having an Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA).
The State is expanding ABHA creation across government hospitals while integrating the identifiers with its upgraded Health Management Information System (HMIS 3.0) to enable seamless digital health records and improve continuity of care.
Officials said the State intends to expand ABHA coverage further as nearly half of Tamil Nadu's population depends on government healthcare services.

Health officials said ABHA offers benefits for patients, healthcare professionals, and policymakers by reducing dependence on paper-based medical records.
Under the ABDM framework, participating hospitals can digitally upload prescriptions, laboratory reports, discharge summaries, and diagnostic images such as CT scans. Patients can securely access these records through a Personal Health Record (PHR) application on their mobile devices.
When they visit another ABDM-enabled hospital, doctors can review the patient's previous medical records after obtaining consent, supporting better clinical decisions and continuity of treatment.
Officials reiterated that ABHA creation remains entirely voluntary and consent-based. Individuals can register using multiple authentication methods, including Aadhaar-linked OTP or biometric verification.
Medical professionals have broadly welcomed the move towards digital healthcare but also highlighted the importance of addressing cybersecurity and operational challenges as adoption grows.
Doctors also stressed that successful implementation of HMIS 3.0 and ABHA integration will require adequate digital infrastructure, including computers, reliable internet connectivity, and sufficient trained manpower across all government healthcare facilities.
