Neuralink's Brain Implant for Speech Impairment Gains FDA Breakthrough Device Status

Elon Musk's brain implant company, Neuralink, announced on Thursday that it has received the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) "breakthrough device" designation for its neural interface, which is designed to restore communication abilities in individuals with severe speech impairments.

The implant is intended to benefit patients suffering from neurological conditions such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), stroke, spinal cord injuries, cerebral palsy, and multiple sclerosis, among others.

Faster Regulatory Pathway for Innovative Technology

The FDA's Breakthrough Devices Program accelerates developing, assessing, and reviewing cutting-edge medical devices that offer more effective treatment or diagnosis for life-threatening or irreversibly debilitating conditions.

The designation aims to provide patients and healthcare providers with faster access to transformative technologies.

Neither the FDA nor Neuralink responded to Reuters' requests for further comment at the time of the announcement.

The designation marks a key step toward eventual clinical use of Neuralink's brain-computer interface.

In another recent development, Musk also announced that Neuralink will perform its first human implant of Blindsight by the end of 2025.

At a Town Hall event in Wisconsin, he shared plans to help individuals with complete blindness regain their sight by the end of this year.

The Blindsight system works by implanting a microelectrode array into the visual cortex, stimulating neurons to create visual perceptions.
