Narayana Health Targets Expansion in Delhi, Plans to Add 500 Beds

Narayana Health has earmarked about INR 30 billion in project capex, with projects scheduled for commissioning during FY28 and FY29.

India’s leading healthcare chain, Narayana Health, has outlined plans to add around 500 hospital beds in Delhi-NCR by FY29 to strengthen its presence in the region.

The proposed addition is expected to be completed over the next two to three years, according to Delhi NCR Cluster Director Ajay Kohli.

“We want to add around 500 beds more here,” Ajay Kohli said, referring to the planned expansion in Delhi.

As per reports, the new capacity forms part of the company’s capital expenditure programme through 2029.

As part of the proposed expansion, Narayana Health has earmarked about INR 30 billion in project capex, with projects scheduled for commissioning during FY28 and FY29.

The company has indicated an estimated INR 10 billion of capital spending in FY28 and another INR 10 billion in FY29.

However, the FY29 allocation applies to the company’s overall operations and has not been specifically assigned to the proposed Delhi expansion.

“Delhi is lacking still in terms of hospital beds compared with other metros," he said.

The demand is particularly strong for specialised healthcare services, including cancer treatment, Kohli added.

According to Kohli, patients from North India and the Northeast continue to travel for advanced care, while a significant share of specialised treatment capacity remains concentrated in western and southern parts of the country. The new expansion is intended to address this gap.

“Delhi is the epicentre of all of it,” Kohli said, highlighting the capital’s role in serving patients from Jammu, Himachal Pradesh and other northern regions.

Alongside the Delhi-NCR expansion, Narayana Health is also considering two additional facilities in North India.

The healthcare group is yet to finalise locations with s, with the projects subject to the company’s financial considerations, reports stated.

The group currently operates facilities in Jaipur, Gurugram, Delhi and Jammu in the northern region, with its North India cluster having 882 beds as per reports.

Further, the healthcare chain is also reassessing the size of its new hospitals. Kohli stated the company is moving away from the model of very large standalone hospitals and sees 250-300 beds as the standard size for a new hospital, with scope for further expansion.

“If you see our reports, hospitals have an occupancy of 60-65%,” Kohli said. He added that very large hospitals would need capacities of around 1,500–2,000 beds to operate efficiently, while smaller 300-bed facilities can reach occupancy levels more easily.

The expansion comes amid ongoing additions to hospital capacity in Delhi. Recently, Fortis Hospital signed an agreement with Seth Sunder Lal Jain Charitable Eye Hospital (SLJ Society) to provide healthcare services to an upcoming 400-bedded super speciality hospital in Ashok Vihar, Delhi. Following this transaction, Fortis's regional capacity is expected to expand to over 3,400 beds.

Earlier, Narayana Health partnered with the New Development Bank to support smart hospital capabilities in member countries through digital health, technology transfer, and patient-centric care.
