Brazilian President Announces Smart Hospital Partnership with Narayana Health Chairman Dr Devi Shetty

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has announced a new healthcare cooperation initiative with Narayana Health’s chairman Dr Devi Shetty during a recent meeting to accelerate the modernisation of Brazil’s public health system.

The initiative is being developed as a trilateral partnership including the BRICS New Development Bank (NDB), the Brazilian government, and India’s Narayana Health network to improve hospital management and digitalisation in the country's public health system.

The announcement follows a recent meeting attended by Brazil's Health Minister Alexandre Padilha, Planning and Budget Minister Miriam Belchior, and physician Ludhmila Hajjar, a professor of emergency medicine at the University of Sao Paulo.

The partnership is intended to bring Narayana Health's expertise in hospital administration and digital healthcare to Brazil's public health system, known as the Sistema Unico de Saude (SUS).

During the meeting, Lula highlighted India's Narayana Health network’s globally recognised model for complex surgeries and specialised treatments at comparatively lower costs through standardised clinical workflows, efficient hospital management and advanced digital systems.

He underscored that the Narayana Health model, which operates hospitals in India and the United Kingdom, is expected to support Brazil’s ongoing effort for the technological transformation of its public healthcare system.

Sharing in social media post, the Brazilian President said, "The trilateral partnership between the BRICS Bank, the Brazilian government, and the Narayana network will promote cooperation for the implementation in the SUS of all the management and digitalization experience of procedures that have made medical and hospital care more efficient and affordable in this hospital network in India and England, contributing to the technological revolution we are carrying out in the SUS.”

The Brazilian President also emphasised the growing scope of health cooperation among developing nations, particularly within the Global South.

"The health sector is one of the most promising areas for cooperation between Global South countries. Brazil and India have already advanced significantly in initiatives for the production of medicines and have enormous potential to progress in the areas of digitalisation and hospital management in the coming years," Lula added.

The new initiative reflects the growing India-Brazil cooperation in healthcare under the BRICS framework, with a shared focus on affordable medical care, digital health systems, and hospital management.

The collaboration is expected to support Brazil's efforts to strengthen its public healthcare infrastructure while leveraging the operational model developed by Narayana Health in India and the United Kingdom.
