Govt Launches AI-Powered Health CoE at Mumbai University

Funded under the Pradhan Mantri Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (PM-USHA), the centre aims to become a national hub for advanced AI research and innovation.

The Ministry of Education has inaugurated a new Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare at the University of Mumbai.

Funded under the Pradhan Mantri Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (PM-USHA), the centre aims to become a national hub for advanced AI research and innovation.

A key focus area of the Centre of Excellence is the empowerment of women's healthcare, achieved through the deployment of accountable AI solutions that aim to enhance diagnosis, treatment, and equitable access to quality healthcare services.

Sunil Barnwal, Additional Secretary of the Department of Higher Education, led the virtual opening of the Centre of Excellence for Artificial Intelligence.

Sharing the development, the Ministry of Education posted on social media platform X, “CoE established with the funding support provided to the University of Mumbai under the PM-USHA scheme, the Centre is envisioned as a hub for cutting-edge research, innovation, and interdisciplinary collaboration. It will particularly focus on women’s health empowerment through responsible AI applications."

Aligned with the PM-USHA scheme, the initiative aligns with the Ministry’s vision of building a preventive, holistic, and responsive health system, while also creating opportunities for youth and researchers to engage in impactful, forward-looking initiatives.

The PM-USHA is a centrally sponsored scheme launched by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, aiming to enhance the quality of higher education in State-run institutions by promoting accessibility, equity, accountability, affordability, and quality, aligning with the five pillars of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
