AIIMS Delhi, TU Dresden Unite for Robotic and AI-Powered Surgery

The three major areas where research will be conducted will include robotic oncology surgeries, AI in oncology surgery and liquid biopsy, which is a non-invasive diagnostic test.

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi, has signed a letter of intent (LoI) with German institute TU Dresden, to transform surgery with AI and deep-tech solutions to tackle health issues.

Under this collaboration, AIIMS Delhi with TU Dresden will work on translational research, clinical integration of digital technologies, and joint startup incubation.

Dr M D Ray, Professor in the Department of Surgical Oncology at Dr B R Ambedkar Institute Rotary Cancer Hospital, AIIMS, said, “We have a huge patient load, and this requires low-cost technology. So far, the conventional robotic surgery is expensive and costs at least INR 2-3 lakh.”

The three major areas where research will be conducted will include robotic oncology surgeries, AI in oncology surgery and liquid biopsy, which is a non-invasive diagnostic test.

According to Prof. Ursula Staudinger, Rector of TU Dresden, “In this emerging partnership, TU Dresden stands at the helm, bringing together Germany's best in medically orientated engineering and Indian clinical expertise to forge a strong interdisciplinary research model at the interface of engineering, medicine, and technological foresight.”

TU Dresden has been steadily building its reputation as a hub for healthcare innovation, particularly through its transCampus partnership with IIT Madras.

The TransCampus model bridges engineering, data science, and clinical practice, and now, with AIIMS New Delhi joining as a core partner, the partnership takes on a truly transformative scope.

The LoI was signed between Prof Ursula Staudinger, head of TU Dresden, and Dr M Srinivas, Director of AIIMS New Delhi.
