Government Launches Hackathon to Bring AI Solutions for Faster Ayushman Bharat Claims

The initiative is part of broader efforts to reduce processing delays and strengthen trust in public health insurance schemes for both hospitals and beneficiaries.

The government has invited researchers, innovators, and technology professionals to develop automated solutions for processing insurance claims under Ayushman Bharat, India’s flagship health insurance program.

The National Health Authority (NHA), operating under the Union Health Ministry, is organising the Auto-Adjudication Hackathon to encourage the creation of scalable tools that streamline claims assessment and settlement under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Aarogya Yojana (PM-JAY).

According to a public notice issued by the National Medical Commission (NMC), the hackathon aims to build systems capable of handling large volumes of claims efficiently, while ensuring accuracy and regulatory compliance. The initiative is part of broader efforts to reduce processing delays and strengthen trust in public health insurance schemes for both hospitals and beneficiaries.

The hackathon will culminate in a two-day offline event at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, on May 8 and 9, where selected teams will present their AI-based solutions. Registrations for the event are open from March 31 to April 13.

The NMC has urged medical colleges and institutions to disseminate information about the hackathon and encourage participation from students, researchers, and professionals in academic and professional networks.

Experts note that automating claims adjudication can significantly cut processing time, reduce manual errors, and enhance transparency — long-standing challenges in large-scale health insurance programs.

Senior officials, including NHA CEO Dr. Sunil Kumar Barnwal and healthcare industry leaders such as Dr. Devi Prasad Shetty, are expected to participate in the opening session. On the second day, discussions will focus on the future of claims adjudication, the role of artificial intelligence in healthcare, and the regulatory frameworks needed to ensure safe technology deployment.

The initiative highlights the government’s push to leverage technology in public healthcare systems, aiming to enhance efficiency and reliability for millions of PM-JAY beneficiaries across India.
