Institutions that have not fully shifted to digital processes have reportedly been directed to begin the transition without delay, including digitisation of earlier patient records wherever possible.

Bihar’s government medical colleges have begun implementing mandatory Digital Health Records linked with ABHA ID, following recent directions issued by the National Medical Commission (NMC).

The move has been aimed at reducing paperwork, improving access to patient information, and creating a more connected treatment system across outpatient, inpatient, and emergency services.

According to officials, the Bihar health department has instructed all principals, deans, and superintendents of government medical colleges to implement the Digital Health Records system immediately.

Institutions that have not fully shifted to digital processes have reportedly been directed to begin the transition without delay, including digitisation of earlier patient records wherever possible.

Under the new system, patients visiting Bihar Medical Colleges will no longer be required to carry multiple paper slips for prescriptions, diagnostic tests, or medical reports.

Once their records are connected to an ABHA ID, doctors and hospital staff will be able to retrieve treatment details directly through the digital platform. This includes access to prescriptions, laboratory reports, medications, and previous consultations.

Health officials said the Digital Health Records system is expected to simplify hospital visits, particularly for patients requiring repeated consultations or treatment across different departments.

The system is also expected to support faster consultations and reduce waiting times in crowded government hospitals. Doctors will be able to view a patient’s medical history in real time, helping improve continuity of care and coordination between departments.

Officials added that creating an ABHA ID has been kept simple to encourage adoption among patients. Registration can be completed within minutes using either an Aadhaar card or a mobile number through the National Health Authority’s digital health platform.
