The collaboration enabled real-time telepresence, ensuring seamless remote surgical interaction, intraoperative mentoring, and the exchange of expertise among leading healthcare institutions.

In a significant move to expand technology-enabled surgical care, the Departments of Surgery at AIIMS Delhi and AIIMS Raipur have collaborated on a robotic-assisted cholecystectomy by using telepresence capability.

The procedure was performed at AIIMS Raipur with remote interoperative support provided by Dr Sunil Chumber from AIIMS Delhi.

By leveraging Intuitive’s da Vinci surgical platform, the collaboration enabled real-time telepresence to ensure seamless remote surgical interaction, intraoperative mentoring, and the exchange of expertise among leading healthcare institutions.

The platform is designed to facilitate continuous interaction among the surgical teams, enabling discussion of key operative strategies, technical nuances, workflow optimisation, and intraoperative decision-making during critical stages of the procedure.

As per the institutions, the telepresence capability supported real-time collaboration and peer-to-peer education by enabling surgeons to connect remotely when in-person participation is not feasible.

The surgical technologies are expected to bridge geographical barriers, support institutional collaboration, enhance surgical education, and improve access to specialized care across regions.

Speaking on the occasion, Lt Gen Ashok Jindal (Retd), Executive Director & CEO, AIIMS Raipur, said, “The future of healthcare will depend not only on technological advancement, but also on how effectively institutions collaborate to strengthen clinical capabilities and improve access to quality care. Technology-enabled partnerships can significantly enhance learning, skill development, and create more connected healthcare ecosystems capable of addressing evolving patient needs across the country.”

Highlighting the initiative, Dr Sunil Chumber, Head of the Department of Surgical Disciplines, AIIMS Delhi, noted that AIIMS Delhi has already performed over 1,000 robotic-assisted surgeries and is increasingly using its experience to support other centres. The collaboration enabled the Delhi team to share its experience and support critical operative steps to help avoid complications during procedures.

The latest development follows AIIMS Raipur’s recent achievement as the first government hospital in central India to install a robotic surgery system. The facility, named ‘Dev Hast,’ was inaugurated by Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai.

Last year in September, AIIMS, New Delhi, inaugurated a da Vinci surgical robotic system at its Skills, E-Learning and Telemedicine (SET) facility to expand training in robotic-assisted surgery.

The latest initiative is intended to advance the adoption of technology-driven surgical education and tele-mentoring in India.
