Under the planned model, Sophia Genetics would function as the AI and analytics backbone of the hub, while MSK would provide clinical and scientific leadership along with access to its clinical data.

Memorial Sloan Kettering (MSK) Cancer Center and AI-driven health technology company Sophia Genetics have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to jointly develop a precision oncology venture focused on artificial intelligence-powered cancer care.

The partnership aims to establish a global precision medicine hub for cancer patients by integrating MSK’s clinical datasets with Sophia Genetics’ AI platform, according to a June 6 announcement. Under the planned model, Sophia Genetics would function as the AI and analytics backbone of the hub, while MSK would provide clinical and scientific leadership along with access to its clinical data.

Sophia Genetics stated that its precision medicine platform has analyzed more than 2.5 million cases since 2014. MSK, meanwhile, has sequenced more than 150,000 tumor samples through its in-house next-generation sequencing platform during the same period.

“This collaboration represents the future of applied precision oncology – where clinical expertise meets cutting-edge AI and robotics with the potential to transform cancer care at scale,” said Michael Frank, MSK director of digital health business development, in a statement. “By combining MSK's deep clinical assets with Sophia Genetics' powerful digital platform, we're seeking to create a new paradigm to deliver personalized insights to patients.”

The companies noted that the final structure of the strategic initiative is yet to be finalized. However, the envisioned framework positions Sophia Genetics as the AI and analytics platform provider for the hub, while MSK contributes clinical leadership and data resources.

The two organizations have previously collaborated on diagnostic innovations.

Sophia Genetics President Ross Muken said the partnership builds on their ongoing work with MSK.

“Over the past several years, we’ve built SOPHiA DDM into a foundational AI and analytics layer for precision medicine, helping institutions across the world unlock the value of their clinical data,” Muken said. “By combining MSK's clinical leadership and deep clinical data with Sophia Genetics' AI platform and global infrastructure, the precision medicine hub that we are discussing will help move precision oncology into the multimodal era and bring the benefits of MSK’s precision oncology to patients regardless of where they're treated.”
