Shija Hospitals & Research Institute Unveils Manipur's First Robotic-Assisted Surgery Facility

The unit is equipped with SSI Mantra 3, a Made-in-India robotic surgical system, bringing advanced robotic-assisted surgery closer to patients in Manipur and the North East.

Shija Hospitals & Research Institute has unveiled an advanced Robotic-Assisted Surgery Unit in Manipur, making it the first robotic surgical facility in the state. The facility also marks the second robotic surgery facility in Northeast India.

The unit is equipped with SSI Mantra 3, a Made-in-India robotic surgical system aimed at bringing advanced robotic-assisted surgery closer to patients in Manipur and the North East.

Addressing the gathering, Rajeev Singh Thakur, Chief Secretary, Government of Manipur, stated that robotic-assisted surgery marks another significant chapter in Shija Hospitals' surgical innovation journey.

He also underscored the hospital's efforts to promote inclusive healthcare by taking medical services to remote and underserved areas through health camps.

Additionally, Sumant Singh, Commissioner, Health & Family Welfare, highlighted Shija's continued investment in technology and specialised healthcare.

He emphasised the importance of collaborative initiatives such as PMJAY in expanding access to quality healthcare.

The surgical platform is designed to support surgeons in performing complex, minimally invasive surgeries with enhanced precision, dexterity, and visualization.

Highlighting the initiative, Dr Palin Khundongbam, Chairman & Managing Director, Shija Hospitals, described it as a milestone and a significant addition to Shija's specialised surgical capabilities and a reflection of its continued commitment to innovation.

The latest development comes as Manipur continues to expand its digital healthcare infrastructure. Recently, Imphal West moved closer to becoming Manipur’s first district to offer fully integrated e-treatment services under the Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA) system, with the state working to strengthen access, continuity of care, and digital health record management.

The facility was inaugurated in the presence of Rajeev Singh Thakur, Chief Secretary; Sumant Singh, Commissioner, Health & Family Welfare; and Dr Palin Khundongbam, Chairman & Managing Director, Shija Hospitals.

The initiative in Manipur is expected to reduce the need for patients requiring such procedures to travel outside the Northeast.

By providing the service locally, the facility is intended to enable eligible patients to access robotic-assisted surgical care closer to home, potentially reducing the logistical and financial burden associated with travelling to other regions for treatment.
