Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute & Research Centre (RGCIRC) has appointed Dr Dharmendra Singh Gangwar as its Chief Executive Officer, effective April 1, 2026, marking a strategic move to enhance clinical excellence, operational efficiency, and research-driven oncology care.

Dr Gangwar brings more than 35 years of experience spanning government administration, healthcare policy, and international collaborations.

A former Secretary to the Government of India and a senior member of the Indian Administrative Service, he has worked extensively across public health systems, including engagements with the World Health Organization.

With a medical degree from King George’s Medical College, Lucknow, he combines clinical understanding with administrative acumen. During his tenure as Additional Secretary and Financial Advisor at the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, he played a key role during the COVID-19 pandemic.

As Chief Financial Officer, he managed a healthcare budget exceeding INR 82,000 Cr, overseeing allocations across national health missions and premier institutions, including AIIMS.

His leadership approach emphasizes data-driven decision-making, financial discipline, and institutional strengthening. At RGCIRC, he is expected to focus on improving patient outcomes, expanding access to advanced cancer therapies, and enhancing the institute’s academic and research capabilities.

His priorities also include leveraging technology and fostering collaborations to build a future-ready oncology ecosystem.

“It is an honour to take on this responsibility at RGCIRC and contribute to making quality cancer care accessible to all,” Dr Gangwar said, adding that he aims to build on the institute’s legacy while advancing patient care, services, and research.

The institute’s governing leadership has expressed confidence in his ability to guide its next phase of growth. Chairman Dr Ashok Kumar Agarwal noted that the appointment reflects a strategic step toward strengthening governance and advancing patient-centred care.

In addition to his new role, Dr Gangwar continues to serve as President of AIIMS Rewari, contributing to the expansion of medical education and tertiary care infrastructure in India.

His executive training at institutions such as the Harvard Kennedy School, Duke University, and IIM Ahmedabad further complements his leadership profile.
