Rajasthan Govt to Integrate Medicine Distribution with Health Records Via iHMS

The Rajasthan government has already initiated pilot projects in select districts and plans to expand the integration statewide in a phased manner.

The Rajasthan government is set to upgrade its public healthcare delivery by integrating medicine distribution with patients' health records through the Integrated Health Management System (IHMS).

This initiative aims to streamline medicine dispensation and ensure better tracking of patients' health data across government health facilities in the state.

Launched in 2011, e-Aushadhi has played a key role in organizing medicine procurement and supply across the state

Currently, the e-Aushadhi system manages the inventory and distribution of medicines to public health institutions in the state, which is not linked to patient health records.

The government now plans to integrate e-Aushadhi with IHMS, allowing real-time recording of every medicine issued into a patient's electronic health profile using their Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA) ID.

A senior health department official said, “We are taking measures to increase the EHRs so that people can use their health records stored electronically while going for doctor’s consultation or for treatment.”

According to health officials, the integration will help monitor the actual consumption of medicines and prevent misuse.

Further the system will also bring several additional benefits for the patients with enhanced transparency, improved patient care, efficient inventory management, and a data-driven policy, that will simplify the administrative procedures.

It will also enable healthcare providers to access a patient’s medical history and prescribed medicines at the point of care, facilitating more informed treatment decisions.

“By linking medicine distribution with health records, we can ensure that the right medicines reach the right patients, and also keep a check on over-prescription or wastage,” an official stated.

The integration is also expected to support the government’s efforts in implementing Universal Health Coverage by providing a comprehensive digital health record for everyone.
