Kalimpong to Get Satellite Biotech Hub as West Bengal Expands Regional Research Infrastructure

The Kalimpong Biotech Hub had been proposed earlier as part of the state’s plans to develop regional biotechnology infrastructure and leverage local biological resources.

West Bengal has laid the foundation stone for a satellite Biotech Hub in Kalimpong, marking a new step towards expanding the state’s biotechnology infrastructure into regional areas.

The foundation stone was digitally laid by Science and Technology and Biotechnology Minister Kalyan Chakraborty during the 33rd West Bengal State Science and Technology Congress 2026 in New Town on September 16.

The Kalimpong Biotech Hub had been proposed earlier as part of the state’s plans to develop regional biotechnology infrastructure and leverage local biological resources.

The Department of Science and Technology and Biotechnology has identified the upcoming regional Biotech Park at Kalimpong as an initiative that will give emphasis to the area’s local resource potential.

At the Congress, Higher Education Minister Jagannath Chattopadhyay called for stronger research links between universities and institutions within West Bengal and those elsewhere in India and abroad.

He encouraged Bengali researchers and professors working outside the state to undertake academic and research activities connected with Bengal.

The state is also seeking to strengthen the use of Bengali in scientific research. The Department of Science and Technology and Biotechnology has proposed developing scientific terminology in Bengali with the involvement of scientists, linguists and scholars.

Alongside the foundation stone for the Kalimpong Biotech Hub, the state has signed an MoU with IIT Kharagpur to support the testing of innovations in real-world settings and the development of affordable and scalable solutions.

For the biotechnology sector, the Kalimpong project adds a regional layer to West Bengal’s existing ecosystem, which includes the Kolkata Biotech Park and biotechnology laboratories established across educational and research institutions.
