IIT Hyderabad, AIIMS Bibinagar Explore Partnership for Healthcare Technologies
Potential areas of collaboration included AI-enabled healthcare, digital health and telemedicine, medical devices and advanced implants, disease research, and technologies for improving healthcare access.
IIT Hyderabad and AIIMS Bibinagar have announced plans to explore joint research and technology-development initiatives that bring medical engineering, artificial intelligence (AI), and medical expertise together to address healthcare challenges in India.
As per reports, the Heads of departments and faculty from both institutions recently held discussions on combining their capabilities in medicine, engineering, artificial intelligence, biomedical sciences, and digital healthcare to address clinical use and challenges.
The discussions focused on identifying areas where technology being developed at IIT Hyderabad could be adapted for clinical use.
IIT Hyderabad intends to support the collaboration by bringing expertise in Artificial Intelligence, drug discovery, molecular biology, advanced materials, biomedical engineering, medical devices, imaging, sensors, nanotechnology, and digital technologies.
In addition, AIIMS Bibinagar is expected to provide clinical and healthcare expertise across areas including infectious diseases, oncology, orthodontics, orthopaedics, and healthcare delivery.
Potential areas of collaboration included AI-enabled healthcare, digital health and telemedicine, medical devices and advanced implants, disease research, and technologies for improving healthcare access.
Further, both institutions also discussed plans to work with Sammakka Sarakka Central Tribal University, Mulugu, on initiatives related to healthcare access for rural and tribal communities.
The discussions are being pursued under IIT Hyderabad Director Prof. B.S. Murty and AIIMS Bibinagar Executive Director Prof. Amita Aggarwal.
IIT Hyderabad Dean of Sponsored Research and Consultancy Prof. G Narahari Sastry facilitated the meeting, while AIIMS Bibinagar Dean of Research Prof. Rahul Narang led the AIIMS delegation.
The latest development follows an earlier MoU signed by IIT Hyderabad and AIIMS, Bibinagar to extend a wide range of collaborations in academics and research between the two institutions, focused on mutual areas of interest, including Biomedical Engineering, Biotechnology, and AI in Healthcare.
AIIMS Bibinagar, established under Phase-VII of the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) in 2019, has become fully operational following the recent visit by Union Health Minister JP Nadda.
Located in Bibinagar near Hyderabad, the institute was launched in 2022 with an investment of over INR 1,100 crore and has since expanded its clinical, academic, and research capabilities.
