Delhi Hospital Conducts North India’s First Robotic Breast Cancer Surgery

The patient, diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer in 2017, had previously undergone chemotherapy, multiple lumpectomies, radiotherapy, and a salpingo-oophorectomy.
A 37-year-old woman with recurrent breast cancer and a BRCA gene mutation has successfully undergone a less-invasive, robotic-assisted oncological surgery at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital in Delhi,. a first in north India, the hospital claimed in a statement.
The patient, diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer in 2017, had previously undergone chemotherapy, multiple lumpectomies, radiotherapy, and a salpingo-oophorectomy.
However, due to her high risk of future recurrence, a bilateral breast surgery combining robotic and conventional techniques was planned.
The procedure was performed by a multi-disciplinary team led by Dr Ramesh Sarin, Senior Consultant–Surgical Oncology; Dr Arun Prasad, Senior Consultant–Gastrointestinal, Bariatric and Robotic Surgery; along with Dr Parag Sharma, Dr Jayanti Tumsi, and Dr Sandip Bipte.
After extensive evaluation, the surgical plan incorporated a nipple-sparing mastectomy using the da Vinci Robotic Surgical System on the right breast, while the left, previously treated, underwent a conventional mastectomy with reconstruction using a musculo-cutaneous flap and implant.
“This procedure represents the future of breast-cancer surgery, especially with healthy breast needs to be removed to protect for future cancer development. The case selectiveness for such surgeries must be stringent,” said Dr Sarin.
Sharing complexities of oncological cases, Dr Prasad said,“Robotic-assisted procedures offer unmatched precision, particularly in complex cancer cases, where every millimetre matters. Such technology not only enhances surgical accuracy but also helps preserve vital structures, reduce operative trauma and deliver superior cosmetic and functional outcomes. This innovation is more than just a technological upgrade, it is a paradigm shift in how we approach cancer surgery, combining clinical excellence with compassionate, patient-centred care.”
The patient tolerated the procedure well and was discharged in a stable condition, the hospital added.
