Assam CM Inaugurates 750-Bed Hospital in Deoghar, Envisions Medical Tourism Hub

A medical college is also planned at the hospital site in the future, linking healthcare delivery with medical education and workforce development.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has inaugurated the 750-bed Baba Baidyanath Medical Trust Hospital in Deoghar, Jharkhand, highlighting its potential to strengthen regional healthcare access and develop into a medical tourism centre.

The Baba Baidyanath Medical Trust Hospital has been established through a joint initiative of the Baba Baidyanath Medical Trust and P.D. Hinduja Hospital and Medical Research Centre.

The facility includes an ICU, emergency unit, and general wards, with its design focused on patient convenience.

Sarma has said the hospital is expected to provide advanced healthcare services, particularly for economically weaker and middle-income sections of the population.

The development adds to Deoghar's expanding healthcare ecosystem, which includes AIIMS Deoghar. Sarma said the two institutions could complement each other and strengthen access to healthcare for people across Jharkhand and neighbouring Bihar.

He noted that patients from Deoghar, Godda and surrounding areas had previously travelled to Kolkata for specialised treatment. With healthcare infrastructure expanding locally, he said Deoghar could increasingly attract patients from outside the city.

“People from Deoghar, Godda and other parts of Jharkhand earlier had to travel to Kolkata for quality medical treatment. However, a strong healthcare ecosystem is gradually being established in the state. People will now increasingly come to Deoghar for medical treatment, and the town, which is a major centre of spiritual tourism, will gradually emerge as a centre of medical tourism as well,” Sarma added.

At the inauguration, Sarma also said Assam now has 16 medical colleges and produces around 2,200 doctors annually, compared with about 350 earlier.

For Assam, Sarma outlined plans to further expand medical education and increase MBBS seats to 4,000.

He also referred to the state's plan to deploy two doctors at each of its 5,000 sub-health centres as part of its healthcare workforce strategy.
