Baby Memorial Hospitals has appointed Shanmuga Priyan as Cluster CEO for its Chennai, Tamil Nadu operations. In his new role, he will lead the group's operations in Chennai and drive strategic growth, operational excellence, projects, new hospital and clinic initiatives, and healthcare transformation.
Shanmuga Priyan brings more than 24 years of experience in hospital operations, P&L management, project commissioning, business development, quality, and strategic planning.
Prior to joining Baby Memorial Hospitals, Shanmuga Priyan served as Chief Strategist for Southeast Asia at JOGO Health.
Earlier in his career, he held senior leadership positions, including Chief Operating Officer at MGM Healthcare and Gleneagles Global Hospitals, Deputy General Manager at Apollo Hospitals, Head of Operations at Fortis Healthcare, Region Head at Vasan Healthcare, and Administrator at Parvathy Hospital.
Over the past five years, he also served as an Independent Healthcare Consultant, advising healthcare organizations, hospital groups, medical institutions, startups, and expansion projects across India and international markets. He worked as a strategic advisor to organizations including SRM Corporate Hospitals, Medway Group of Hospitals, MGM Healthcare, Reliva Rehab, Dr Humayun Speciality Hospital, Wellcube Dubai, and St. Peter's Medical College & Hospital. His work focused on hospital commissioning, healthcare transformation, business expansion, and strategic transactions.
His appointment marks a new leadership addition for Baby Memorial Hospitals as the group continues its operations in Chennai.
Months back, the US-based private equity firm KKR invested INR 1,750 crore in the Hospital, aimed at strengthening the hospital chain’s acquisition strategy and regional expansion Following the investment, KKR’s ownership in the hospital has increased to aproximately 75%.
KKR's investment strategy with BMH mirrors its earlier approach with Max Healthcare and Radiant Life Care, where it facilitated consolidation and scale before exiting at significant returns. The current plan includes expanding existing facilities and actively pursuing acquisitions of other hospital assets.
KKR initially invested around INR 2,100 crore in Baby Memorial Hospital in July 2024 to build a network of hospitals in southern India. It subsequently increased its investment by INR 1,261 crore in the hospital in September last year, before the latest investment.
Currently, BMH operates a network of nine hospitals across Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana, with a total bed capacity of approximately 3,000. As per reports, the combined entity is expected to generate INR 2,500 crore in revenue this financial year.
