The platform seeks to provide same-day whole-genome sequencing results in research workflows while supporting near real-time data analysis.
Roche has launched AXELIOS 1, a next-generation sequencing platform aimed at supporting genomic research and clinical workflows through scalable and high-throughput sequencing capabilities.
The platform is powered by the company's proprietary Sequencing by Expansion (SBX) technology.
AXELIOS 1 is designed to combine speed, accuracy, scalability, and cost efficiency, enabling research laboratories of different sizes to perform a broad range of sequencing applications.
The company said the platform seeks to provide same-day whole-genome sequencing results in research workflows while supporting near real-time data analysis.
At the core of the platform is the SBX technology, designed to convert DNA and RNA into enlarged surrogate molecules called “Xpandomers,” designed to amplify signal clarity as they pass through a reusable CMOS-based nanopore sensor system.
The AXELIOS 1 platform has been designed to support a wide range of sequencing workloads, enabling laboratories to process both small-scale research projects and large genomic studies on a single instrument without requiring workflow modifications.
According to the company, the system functions as a flexible architecture intended to facilitate same-day whole-genome sequencing results, depending on the specific application and laboratory setup.
Alongside the platform, Roche is introducing a suite of supporting tools, including library preparation kits and its open-source bioinformatics platform, XOOS.
The system is also compatible with third-party analytical solutions such as Google DeepVariant. In addition, Roche has established collaborations with organizations including the Hartwig Medical Foundation, Broad Clinical Labs, and 10x Genomics to support applications in areas such as single-cell and spatial biology research.
Commenting on the latest development, Matt Sause, CEO of Roche Diagnostics, said, “AXELIOS 1 will deliver a disruptive sequencing solution that combines high accuracy with unprecedented speed and scalability. These attributes, combined with our high level of cost efficiency, will enable the sequencing community to develop applications that previously were not feasible.”
