Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao has announced the establishment of a Health Emergency Operations Centre (HEOC) at Arogya Soudha to strengthen the state’s capacity to manage public health emergencies through a centralised and technology-driven system.

The facility is designed to act as a command-and-control hub, enabling real-time data surveillance, coordinated decision-making, and rapid response during crises such as infectious disease outbreaks, natural disasters, and other large-scale health threats.

Developed under the Pradhan Mantri-Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission, the centre aims to improve preparedness by integrating multiple critical functions, including data collection, risk assessment, communication, and inter-agency coordination.

It is equipped to monitor health indicators across districts, issue timely alerts, and support evidence-based decision-making for authorities.

The initiative reflects lessons learned during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly the need for a structured system to manage information flow and emergency response efficiently.

The HEOC will work in close coordination with existing healthcare infrastructure, including disease surveillance units, laboratory networks, and emergency response services such as ambulance systems.

By bringing these elements under a unified framework, the state seeks to reduce response time, streamline resource allocation, and ensure consistent communication between state and district-level health authorities.

Situated within the administrative headquarters of Karnataka’s Health and Family Welfare Department, the centre is also expected to play a role in training personnel, conducting simulation exercises, and strengthening overall emergency preparedness.
