The system is expected to reduce surgical trauma, minimise blood loss, lower post-operative pain, decrease the risk of wound-related complications, and enable faster recovery.
Leading healthcare institution in Kolkata, BM Birla Heart Hospital, a part of CK Birla Hospitals, has introduced robotic-assisted cardiac surgery with the deployment of the Da Vinci Surgical System, expanding its capabilities in minimally invasive heart procedures.
The technology is intended to support surgeons in performing select cardiac surgeries using robotic-assisted techniques designed to support greater precision and control during procedures.
The system translates a surgeon's hand movements into highly refined movements of robotic instruments, supported by high-definition 3D visualisation.
Unlike conventional open-heart surgery, robotic-assisted cardiac surgery is performed through small incisions using surgeon-controlled robotic instruments.
As per the institution, the system is expected to reduce surgical trauma, minimise blood loss, lower post-operative pain, decrease the risk of wound-related complications, and enable faster recovery.
Describing the initiative as significant for Eastern India, Dr Manoj Daga, Director of Cardiac Surgery at BM Birla Heart Hospital, said, “Eastern India carries a significant burden of cardiac disease, and patients in this region have historically had to travel considerable distances for procedures that require advanced surgical infrastructure. The addition of robotic cardiac surgery to our programme means that the level of care is now available here.”
“Our focus has been on building a comprehensive cardiac surgery programme capable of handling the most complex cases while improving precision, recovery, and overall patient outcomes. This is an important step in that direction,” he added.
According to the hospital, the addition of robotic-assisted cardiac surgery is part of the hospital’s broader efforts to expand access to advanced surgical technologies and expand treatment options for patients requiring specialised heart care.
Commenting on the latest development, Supratik De Sarkar, Regional Head of CK Birla Hospitals, BM Birla Heart Hospital (Kolkata and Jaipur), said, “The investment we have made in this programme reflects that commitment. We want referring doctors, patients, and families across this region to know that when a cardiac case is complex, this is where it can be brought. That is the standard we are working toward, and robotic surgery is part of how we get there.”
