Kerala is expected to get an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in the near future, Vice President CP Radhakrishnan has said.

He also stressed that advances in artificial intelligence, robotics and digital healthcare must complement the human role of doctors.

He said the expansion of medical education has gained greater emphasis as part of the Viksit Bharat vision, pointing to the growth of AIIMS institutions across the country.

In March 2026, the Kerala High Court had sought an explanation from the Central government on the criteria used to select states for establishing AIIMS under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY).

The Centre told the court that 22 new AIIMS were being established across states and Union Territories, with 18 already functional and four at different stages of construction at that time.

Speaking about the changing healthcare landscape, Radhakrishnan highlighted artificial intelligence, robotics, digital health, advanced imaging and precision medicine as technologies reshaping medical practice.

“A machine can analyse. A robot can assist. An algorithm can identify patterns. But a patient still needs a doctor who can listen, understand, reassure and take responsibility,” he said.

At the same time, he emphasised that technology should support rather than replace the doctor-patient relationship.

Radhakrishnan made the remarks while addressing a recent event in Trivandrum, Kerala.
