Cipla Appoints Former COO Achin Gupta As Managing Director & Global CEO

Achin Gupta succeeds Umang Vohra, who stepped down after leading the company for nearly a decade.

In a major leadership transition move, global pharma giant Cipla has appointed Achin Gupta as its Managing Director and Global Chief Executive Officer, effective from April 1st 2026.

The transition forms part of a planned succession process aimed at ensuring continuity in leadership as the company moves into its next phase of growth.

Before this appointment, Gupta served as Global Chief Operating Officer and has been serving as CEO-designate since January 2026, will take over as Managing Director and Global CEO for a five-year term, subject to shareholder approval.

In his new role, Gupta is expected to lead Cipla’s business operations and drive its strategic priorities, including growth in international markets and continued focus on patient-centric healthcare delivery.

Commenting on his transition, Gupta noted he would focus on driving sustainable growth, strengthening global presence, and continuing innovation-led expansion, building on the foundation laid by his predecessor.

Journey at Cipla

Gupta, who joined Cipla in 2021, had previously led Cipla’s “One India” business, delivering market-leading profitability and expanding the company’s reach in chronic therapies and underserved markets, according to the company.

As a Global COO, he oversaw key functions including commercial operations, manufacturing supply chain, and active pharmaceutical ingredients

Further, he has been instrumental in strengthening the company’s commercial markets, API operations, and supply chain since becoming GCOO in February 2025.

Under his leadership, Cipla achieved market-leading profitability, expanded its chronic therapy portfolio, and advanced patient-focused innovations. He holds an M.Tech in Biochemical Engineering and Biotechnology from IIT Delhi and an MBA from IIM Ahmedabad.

He brings over two decades of experience across the pharmaceutical and healthcare sectors, with prior roles at Glenmark Pharmaceuticals, Abbott Laboratories, and A.T. Kearney.

Sharing his thoughts, Cipla Chairman Dr Y K Hamied credited Vohra’s leadership with combining business growth with a humanitarian approach, noting his “outstanding contributions and dedication” to the organisation.

Vohra, who joined Cipla in 2015 and became Managing Director and Global CEO in 2016, led the company through a period of transformation, including expansion of its global footprint, strengthening of digital and manufacturing capabilities, and focus on innovation-driven growth.

Reflecting on his journey, the outgoing MD & Global CEO, Umang Vohra, stated his time at Cipla was guided by its purpose of “Caring for Life”, adding that he was proud of the company’s focus on patients and innovation.

Alongside the appointment of Achin Gupta, Cipla has also named Saurabh Gambhir and Satyavan Manikani as Senior Management Personnel, with their appointments also effective from the same date.
