Chandigarh Eyes INR 2000 Cr Fund from Centre for Regional Medical Hub
The proposed facility includes a 500-bed Centre for Super-Speciality Care intended to provide trauma, cardiology, neurology, and emergency-care services.
Chandigarh government has sought an INR 2,000 crore fund from the Central government for the proposed Chandigarh Regional Medical Hub to strengthen public healthcare infrastructure.
Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria recently raised the funding request during his meeting with Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda in New Delhi.
The Regional Medical Hub is planned as an AIIMS-level institution in Sector 53, with facilities for super-speciality treatment, medical research and postgraduate education.
The Medical Hub is designed as a 1,000-bed facility featuring a 500-bed Centre for Women and Child Healthcare.
It also includes a 500-bed Centre for Super-Speciality Care intended to provide trauma, cardiology, neurology, and emergency-care services.
The proposed hub is intended to serve patients from Chandigarh as well as neighbouring regions of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and other adjoining areas.
The project received approval from the Chandigarh administration earlier this year.
The project has an estimated cost of INR 2,154 crore, of which approximately INR 1,704 crore is allocated for civil infrastructure and INR 450 crore for advanced medical equipment.
The latest development follows earlier discussions on establishing a regional medical hub in Chandigarh to address the healthcare needs of the wider region.
The administration has also sought 36 additional postgraduate medical seats, which is expected to expand the city’s capacity for specialist medical training.
Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated multiple healthcare projects at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education & Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, as part of a broader development package worth over INR 4,700 crore covering healthcare, education, and road infrastructure.
