The Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology (AINU), Hyderabad, has performed a cross-border robotic telesurgery procedure between India and China, marking a notable development in the use of remote surgical technologies in urology care.

Dr Syed Md. Ghouse, Director of Robotic and Minimal Access Urological Surgery at AINU, performed the telesurgery using a robotic surgical platform supported by ultra-low latency connectivity.

“With advancements in 5G, tele-proctoring is emerging as the future, enabling experienced surgeons to guide teams remotely during critical steps. This collaborative model ensures high-quality care reaches patients closer to home, without replacing the essential role of the on-ground surgical team," said Dr Mallikarjuna C, Managing Director, Chief Consultant Urologist & Robotic Surgeon, AINU Banjara Hills.

The surgery linked Hyderabad, India, with Wuhan, China, covering an aerial distance of nearly 3,900 kilometres.

According to the hospital, the robotic-assisted ureteric reimplantation was performed on a 57-year-old patient from Hyderabad who had been experiencing recurring ureteric obstruction caused by a lower ureteric stricture.

During the procedure, the surgical teams at AINU and Tongji Hospital worked together in real time using robotic technology supported by connectivity with latency reported to be under 100 milliseconds.

“This milestone reflects how technology is redefining the boundaries of surgical care. With robotic platforms and robust connectivity, we can now deliver highly specialized procedures across continents with the same precision as being physically present. This is a significant step towards equitable access to advanced cancer care,” said Dr Syed Md. Ghouse, Director of Robotic & Minimal Access Urological Surgery at AINU.
